Mercedes-Benz has not just given the already successful B-Class a thorough facelift, giving particular attention to an upgrade of the interior, it has added the B 200 Natural Gas Drive to the portfolio. Featuring the “energy space” bodyshell concept, the underbody houses one large and two smaller natural gas tanks and a 14‑litre petrol tank, thereby retaining the generously proportioned luggage compartment for which the model is known. Natural Gas Vehicles in Europe update
German Study Recommends Launch of LNG Trucks
Road haulage in Germany, which depends almost entirely on mineral oil, is growing significantly, leading to rising greenhouse gas emissions. Liquefied natural gas (LNG), as an alternative fuel, has the potential to diversify the energy supply and reduce the carbon footprint of road freight transport and transported goods. This is the result of a study carried out by the Deutsche Energie-Agentur (dena) – the German Energy Agency. Continue reading

EU directive on green mobility comes into force: All Member States must develop infrastructure for natural gas as fuel
The way forward is clear for natural gas-powered green mobility in Europe. Last Tuesday, a new EU directive came into force that calls for the expansion of an alternative filling station network throughout Europe. Member States are now required to set binding national targets by 2016. These include, among other things, the installation of natural gas and LNG fuel pumps, as well as transparent pricing at filling stations. With the ‘Directive on the deployment of an alternative fuels infrastructure’ [COM (2013) 17], the EU wants to reduce the transport sector’s dependence on oil and curb emissions. To this end, the directive focuses on particularly low-emission fuels, giving compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) key roles to play alongside electric power. Continue reading

Argos first retailer to use greener gas-powered trucks
Argos is set to pave the way in low-carbon deliveries, being the first retailer to bring in new ultra-low emission vehicles.
The five new compressed natural gas-fuelled trucks, supplied by Scania, will be on the road by the end of this year helping to deliver stock to Argos stores nationwide. Designed to run solely on gas (compressed or liquified), the trucks provide carbon dioxide reductions of up to 70 percent when run on pure biogas, and are extremely quiet.
Argos Fleet Engineer, David Landy, said: “With such low emissions of carbon dioxide, the potential environmental benefits of running purely on gas exceed those of dual-fuel operation. It is an exciting prospect to be the first to put dedicated gas-powered trucks into service. We now look forward to taking delivery of them and evaluating their performance over the long-term.”
