Volkswagen has been represented in the marketplace with CNG engines since 2002.
The new three-cylinder turbocharged engine with a cubic capacity of 1.0 liter and high torque of 66 kW (90 PS) that is being shown at the Vienna Motor Symposium is bivalent: it can be run on gasoline or CNG. In gas-powered mode it works in a particularly low-emission manner—and that applies both to CO2 and NOx particulate emissions. The compact 1.0 TGI is a new engine specification for the small car class in the Volkswagen Group.

Power from gas: The new Audi A5 Sportback g-tron
Audi is further expanding its g-tron fleet. The Audi A5 Sportback g-tron*, alongside the A3 Sportback g-tron* and the A4 Avant g-tron*, is now the third model that customers can run on a choice of climate-friendly Audi e‑gas, natural gas (CNG) or gasoline. It is available to order from early summer 2017.
The A5 g-tron is powered by a 2.0 TFSI engine. It develops 125 kW (170 hp) of power and 270 Nm (199.1 lb-ft) of torque. With CO2 emissions of just 100 grams per kilometer (160.9 g/mi) (with S tronic), Audi is the first premium manufacturer to offer a gasoline engine in the B segment that achieves lower emissions than a comparable diesel engine.
The newly developed engine is based on the gasoline-powered 2.0 TFSI: Here, too, the innovative combustion process is used. It features a shortened compression stroke and a long power stroke as well as an increased compression ratio that has been specially designed for part load operation, by far the most common operating mode. The intake valves close much sooner than usual. In combination with increased pressure in the intake manifold, this reduces throttle losses during intake.

Power from gas: The new Audi A4 Avant g-tron
Sporty and versatile: The A4 Avant g-tron* is yet another Audi vehicle offering sustainable mobility for the future.
Dealers will begin taking orders for the midsize model starting in early summer 2017.
The A4 Avant g-tron is simultaneously sporty, efficient and extremely economical.
The engine is based on the new 2.0 TFSI featuring an advanced, highly efficient combustion process developed by Audi.
The turbocharged power plant produces 125 kW (170 hp). Maximum torque of 270 Nm (199.1 lb-ft) is available at approx. 1,650 rpm.
The pistons and valves have been specially modified for gas operation and allow for an optimal compression ratio. An electronic controller reduces the high pressure of the compressed natural gas (CNG) flowing from the tank from as much as 200 bar to a working pressure of 5 to 10 bar in the engine. This pressure control function is performed dynamically and precisely in response to the power requested by the driver. The correct pressure is always present in the gas line and at the injector valves – low pressure for efficient driving in the lower speed range, and higher pressure for more power and torque.
